Features

Built for how barristers actually work

Swipe through what Counsel does today – the rail advances on its own, or take it at your own pace.

  • Matters

Keep each brief, task and filing thread in one place. Matters stay readable when your week turns busy.

  • Time recording & timers

Capture work in six-minute units, or run a live timer from Task Overview and let Counsel round it to your matter’s billing band.

  • Invoicing, receipts & interest

Move recorded work to a clean tax invoice with less re-keying – then issue receipts, statements of outstanding fees and overdue-interest invoices from the same data.

  • GST & reports

Cash-basis P&L, GST/BAS, aged debtors, work-in-progress and turnover – ex-GST figures the way barristers need, exportable to PDF, Word and Excel.

  • Court diary

Keep every hearing, directions date, mention and filing deadline across all matters in one diary – subscribe from Outlook or your phone via a private iCal feed.

  • Action items & upcoming

A per-matter to-do list with due dates that rolls up into a single Upcoming view – overdue, today, this week and the next 30 days at a glance.

  • Tax returns

Record each financial year’s lodged return and lock that year’s expenses so the figures behind it can’t drift – fully reversible, with an audit trail.

  • Document templates

Turn your own Word documents into reusable templates Counsel fills from a matter or invoice – including one-click conversion of existing BarBooks templates.

  • Yours, and Australian-hosted

Your practice lives in one encrypted store you control, hosted in Australia, with scheduled encrypted backups. No third-party cloud holds your client files.

  • Mobile

Install Counsel as a phone app – check the dashboard and drop in a task or expense between court, chambers and clients.

  • Missing something useful?

Think there’s something missing that would make practice easier? Reach out and we’ll work with you to add it. New features are added regularly to keep Counsel matched to how Australian barristers actually work – and to make your life easier.

  • On AI

Counsel has no built-in AI features. We’re investigating – and seeking barristers’ feedback on – whether and how AI should be integrated, and would seek that feedback before adding anything. Our first concern is data sanctity: your practice is hosted in Australia and fully under your control, and AI raises privacy, confidentiality and privilege questions that must be properly managed first.
